Compensation Disclosure

It’s crucial that we communicate effectively and clearly with our partners. If you’d like to read the Rights Holder Agreement we use, you can do so here.

Additionally, we know how important it is that our partners get paid on time. So, royalties are collected and distributed quarterly which results in near-instant returns. That’s only part of the reason our licences have a 97% renewal rate and why our rightsholders keep working with us year after year.

But let’s get into exactly how our rightsholders get paid.

Distribution Policy
MPLC pays rightsholder’s their share of royalties based on collected licence fees on a calendar quarterly basis. Payment and royalty statements are issued no later than sixty (60) days following the close of each quarter.

The MPLC royalty allocation is built on independent data sources and market intelligence, ensuring a fair assessment of each rightsholder’s content value and popularity. Each territory comprises multiple markets (health care, commercial establishments, etc.) and each market contains two royalty pools, “Theatrical” and “TV/All Other”. Royalty pool allocations vary by market within the country

Recognizing that not all producers have significant presence in cinemas or on television, MPLC maintains a further royalty pool wherein independent producers participate. Up to 5% of the total royalties are allocated to this pool, reflecting their relative popularity and awareness compared to all other participating studios.

MPLC conducts an annual assessment to ensure allocations reflect the respective rights granted from our rightsholders.

Data Sources
For major theatrical rightsholders, it is based on Box Office data as provided by Comscore. For non-theatrical rightsholders, it is scheduled TV channel minutes as provided by Rovi/TiVo.

General Policy on Deductions
MPLC deducts a set % management fee of revenue received as determined by individual contract with each rightsholder. License fee receipts are calculated on, and reported, net of value added taxes, goods and services taxes, withholding taxes, sales taxes, excise taxes and similar taxes while every rightsholder has the option to be paid in the local currency where the license fee was collected. There are no other deductions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why might our business need an MPLC licence?

Many organisations are not aware that there can be a gap between accessing content and having permission to show it in a business setting. If employees are streaming from a work device or showing TV and film content within the workplace, this is a public performance. An MPLC licence helps close that gap so you can continue using our rightsholder content with confidence.

Without the right licence, businesses can be exposed to unintentional copyright risk. This often happens without awareness. A licence removes that uncertainty and provides reassurance that your use of content is appropriately covered.

The MPLC Blanket Licence provides a simple, all-in-one solution. Instead of securing permission for each program or film, one annual blanket licence covers a wide range of content from thousands of rightsholders across your organisation. It removes the need to track usage or manage permissions screen by screen, making compliance straightforward.

Yes. MPLC works in a similar way for TV, films and streaming content. Just as PRS and PPL cover music use in public settings, MPLC covers video content.
