The history of film societies in the UK is deep and extensive, reaching back one hundred years. To celebrate the occasion, Cinema For All has been hosting special events this year and we were happy to support their gala in Sheffield last weekend.
The event kicked off at 3pm on Saturday with the exhibition at Bloc Projects featuring a range of heritage items from the Cinema For All archives. Dr. Matthew Rule-Jones, Film Lecturer from the University of Exeter and Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, was also on hand for a fascinating talk.
In the evening, the 100 Years Gala began with a red carpet and led into the 2025 Film Society of the Year and Legacy Awards supported by MPLC. Followed by the showing short film, “Rebels with Projectors” which explores and honours
the film society movement.
Those who helped found these film societies one hundred years ago knew one thing that still resonates with audiences today; cinema brings us together. And, by sponsoring events like this, we’re happy to help continue the tradition to this day.
